[hbd] A Birthday Celebration

This was drawn in July of 2012 and colored in September of 2012.

This is really late in coming. Like, REALLY late.

Kay-chan! Please forgive me for my insolence! Your birthday gift is so late and if you ask me, it really sucks *shot*

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, KAY-CHAN!!! I PROMISE NEXT YEAR’S WON’T BE NEARLY AS LATE AS THIS ONE BUT I CAN’T PROMISE IT’LL BE ON TIME *shot again*

When I first started this picture, I wanted to do something in my own style without using any references. The sketch is terrible. This one’s only slightly better for three reasons—1) The hair is slightly less poofy. 2) The lips look much better in this version, much wider and thinner. 3) The eye style is Kay’s eye style.

No really, that third one is true. I looked up a pic of Kay in Kay-chan’s gallery and did my best to imitate it so Kay actually looked legit and whatnot. I’m pleased, but it still could use a little work.

Rather than go all out on my own coloring style this time, I tried to make the shading look a little more realistic. I don’t know how I feel about it. I do like the way the wrap turned out, though, I must admit. There’s something off about the hair on both Seto and Kay and it’s bugging me, but I can’t figure out how to say it. (2/28/2020 Edit: It's because the opacity on my dodge tool had been turned down. I still don't know how that happened.) I think my shading colors still need to be darker. I’ll work on that next time.

Kay’s hands look wonky. I realize that. I suck at hands. I’ll work to better my hands since they need lots of work, OBVIOUSLY.
Also, my chibi style needs work. Specifically in the hands/arms department. And the proportions. And I need to stop drawing guys with girl legs and hips and butts, as Seto has in this one *facepalm*
Oh! And Kay’s shirt is supposed to say ELEGANT, but most of the letters got cut off. Oh well.

The background is messy but semi-realistic. I don’t know what I was thinking, but I hope you can at least tell what everything is. I hope.

SCENARIO!
Ever since Seto was accidentally turned into a chibi, Kay has been tasked with babysitting him—for some reason, the chibi-fying has caused him to act a little bit more like a child, so he needs constant attention. On Kay’s birthday, he’s gone completely bananas with energy so Kay takes him on a walk to the park to calm him down. While they’re there, a photographer, who finds Kay attractive, wants to take pictures to exemplify her beauty. She agrees but only if the photographer will pay her. As she poses for the man’s pictures, Chibi Seto notices her beauty, too, but pretends not to as he tries to hide a blush.
